Here is what makes this one different from an ordinary dollar bill. When the Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces a note that fails quality inspection, it gets pulled and destroyed. The replacement that takes its place is marked with a star (*) suffix on the serial number so the sequence stays intact. Those replacement notes are printed in far smaller quantities than the standard run, and collectors have tracked them for decades. This is one of those. Serial number L 10695870*, issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (District 12). San Francisco District star notes from the 2017 series were produced in modest quantities relative to other districts, adding genuine scarcity to the star designation. The obverse carries the George Washington portrait based on the Gilbert Stuart Athenaeum painting. The reverse features both seals of the Great Seal, including the unfinished pyramid with the Eye of Providence. The note presents in uncirculated condition with crisp paper and sharp printing.
