Australia $1 'Mob of Roos' 1984 - First Year of Issue Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II (obverse) / Five kangaroos by Stuart Devlin (reverse) Grade (our assessment): AU-50 to UNC (About Uncirculated to Uncirculated) Slabbed: No (raw coin, housed in clear acrylic capsule) Metal: Aluminium-bronze (92% copper, 6% aluminium, 2% nickel) Weight: 9g Diameter: 25mm Mintage: Approximately 186,400,000 (Royal Australian Mint, Canberra) Surface: Moderate golden-brown natural toning consistent with aged aluminium-bronze; even in distribution Cleaning: No evidence of artificial cleaning Condition notes: Reverse only photographed. Good detail retained on all five kangaroo figures with visible fur texture and musculature. Very slight friction or flatness on the highest points. Some minor contact marks or bag marks may be present. Stored in acrylic capsule. Obverse not photographed; buyer inspection recommended for complete assessment. The 1984 Australian $1 coin was the first year of issue for the denomination, replacing the paper $1 banknote. Stuart Devlin's "Mob of Roos" reverse design - five kangaroos in motion - has been used continuously on the standard $1 coin to this day. The 1984 date is popular with collectors as the inaugural year.
