Overview

Pair of Chinese-style high-back timber chairs with carved and pierced decorative panels. Each chair features a tall yoke-style back with carved scenic panels depicting landscapes and geometric fretwork motifs. The backrests include pierced diamond-shaped cutouts and scrolled brackets at the armrest junction. The aprons beneath the seats feature carved openwork fretwork, and the legs are joined by stretcher bars on all four sides.

The chairs are finished in a dark reddish-brown lacquer over solid timber construction.180cm x 50cm x 38cm

A handwritten tag attached to the chairs reads: "FOG CITY - SET DEC", "SET: CHINATOWN", "SET LOCATION: TANG TANG", "SET CODE: 291", "ITEMS: ANTIQUE CHINESE WOODEN CHAIRS x 2", "SD 491", "291-13". This indicates the chairs were used as set decoration props.

Condition Notes

The chairs show wear consistent with age and use. The seat surfaces display scuffing, surface marks, staining and areas where the lacquer finish has worn through, with pale circular marks visible on the right-hand chair seat. The lacquer finish on the legs and stretchers shows wear, rubbing and areas of finish loss, particularly at the base of the legs where contact with the floor has occurred. The rear view shows further finish wear and some discolouration to the timber. The carved fretwork and pierced panels appear intact on both chairs. The joints and stretchers appear structurally sound. Both chairs sit level.
